CRZY

In the music video of CRZY, she shows a more camp side of herself. She has received a lot of criticism on how she identifies herself as “Queer” especially after her pregnancy in 2018.

The video shows herself moving in a masculine manner – indicating her strength as a woman. Kehlani also uses the term “bitch” in a positive light hearted way which is her way of going against the sexist term when men use it.

SweetSexySavage

Kehlani’s debut album 2017

After releasing this album, Kehlani spread the message and importance of self-love. As a way of healing from her struggles, she speaks through her music, reaching out to many others going through anything similar.

This was a big moment of success for the artist as she was well celebrated for her album with its sense of female empowerment. I write in detail a short analysis of the album in my report.

Kehlani – Distraction (Official Video)

In this music video, Kehlani portrays herself as a sexual object however takes ownership of her body. This links to my Literature Review where I found an academic report on the difference of the message given when the artist in the video is a female compared to a male. I also go into more depth in my Discussion of Findings where I analyse this video.

IG Miscommunication

In 2016, Kehlani was accused of cheating with Kyrie Irving after PARTYNEXTDOOR posted this on his Instagram. Speculations led to hate comments on Kehlani’s social media platforms which led to a suicide attempt.

Although this was only a rumour, as a woman, this is something that is frowned down on and magnified than if it was a man. If the roles were reversed, it would not have led to the same reactions towards the PARTYNEXTDOOR. I go into more depth about the inequality of men and women within the music industry in my report.

Intro

This is a multi-media dossier I have created to demonstrate the contrast between problematic and alternative representations of Kehlani and how the media constructs the way she is. This will be in response to my report “How does Kehlani demonstrate feminism in a male-dominated industry through her lifestyle and music?”
